About Me: Elias “Eli” McCrae

Criminal Justice Policy Advisor | Advocate for Fair Defence | Winnipeg, MB

Introduction

Hi, I’m Elias McCrae but most people call me Eli. For over 16 years, I’ve worked behind the scenes of Canada’s criminal justice system, helping defence lawyers build stronger and fairer cases. This blog isn’t about legal jargon or courtroom drama. It’s about making the law understandable for everyone, especially for people who never thought about it until they suddenly had to.

I created this space so everyday people can learn how the law works, what their rights are, and how to face legal challenges with confidence. Whether you’re navigating the system yourself, supporting someone who is, or just curious about how justice is supposed to work, you’ll find practical insights here.

What I Do

My work sits at the intersection of law, policy, and advocacy. I collaborate with defence lawyers, legal aid organisations, and community groups to ensure justice isn’t just a principle; it’s applied meaningfully in real cases that affect real lives. Whether I’m researching case law, identifying overlooked rights violations, or advising on sentencing strategies, my goal is always the same: to make the system more just, transparent, and accountable.

Areas of Focus

Charter Rights and Procedural Fairness I help defence teams spot violations like unlawful searches, arbitrary detentions, or failures to inform accused persons of their rights. These aren’t just technicalities, they’re the foundation of a fair trial. When ignored, the entire process is compromised.

Sentencing and Mitigation Strategy I’ve developed strategies that look beyond the surface, taking into account social history, mental health, systemic disadvantage, and life context. I advocate for alternatives to incarceration, especially for youth, Indigenous people, and those affected by addiction and poverty.

Policy Development and Reform I’ve contributed to proposals that reform bail practices, expand diversion programs, and improve access to representation. I partner with justice departments, non-profits, and academic institutions to push for reforms that reflect the lived realities of those most impacted by the system.

My Approach

What sets me apart is perspective. I’m not a litigator, but I know what makes a compelling argument. I’m not bound by courtroom formalities, but I understand them deeply. I’ve built credibility by being thorough, reliable, and relentlessly curious. I ask questions others overlook, dig into the details, and never lose sight of the people whose futures depend on the outcome.

Community Engagement

Beyond case work, I mentor young professionals and speak at community forums on the importance of fair defence. I believe public education is a vital part of justice reform. When people know their rights, they’re better equipped to protect them. When communities understand how the system works and where it fails, they’re empowered to demand better.

Life Outside Work

Outside of work, I’m pretty low-key. I read a lot, mostly legal history and crime novels. I play guitar badly, but with enthusiasm. I volunteer with youth outreach programs because I believe early intervention changes lives. And whenever I can, I head outdoors to hike Manitoba’s trails and reflect.

My Mission

Ultimately, my work is about fairness. It’s about making sure the defence is not just a formality but a true force for justice. It’s about challenging assumptions, exposing flaws, and standing up for people who might not have anyone else in their corner.

This blog is my way of sharing what I’ve learned so that you don’t feel lost when facing legal questions. I’ll break down complex ideas, explain your rights, and offer practical, plain-language insights. Justice should be accessible, not intimidating.
